Winter Lawson
Theater Production Director 2018
“I had the opportunity as a sophomore on Princess Ten Ten and the Dark Skies as the Assistant Director to Chari Arespacochaga, an experienced theater professional. The following year, I became the Associate Director, and then as a senior, I became the Director. It’s not just enough to say that working on productions of Princess Ten Ten changed the course of my college career or that it impacted how I view both theatre and education. This experience led me to pursue my passion for creating and fostering an inclusive workplace wherever I go.
I relate to Princess Ten Ten because I, too, am gender non-conforming and non-binary. It’s important to me that there are stories like this being told, especially in front of children and their parents. I believe that Princess Ten Ten does more than just inspire people with her courage, but also encourages needed conversations about gender and gender stereotypes so that the experiences of transgender people are respected. It’s not just telling their stories that’s important, it’s the ability to see how people around them can help or hinder them by giving them space and the freedom to speak up for themselves.
Moreover, Princess Ten Ten highlights how storytelling can be empowering for all those involved, no matter their age. As artists and storytellers, it’s important to create and celebrate media that educates and humanizes the experiences of marginalized people.”
